Social Security Benefits can be a very complicated issue. There are several factors that determine your eligibility and the others that determine the amount of benefits. Your question, unfortunately brings up many other questions to fully answer it. But I will do the best I can. If you are currently receiving Social Security Benefits based on your own eligibility, it will not be affected by your spouse’s status. If you are receiving spousal benefits, your status should again be unchanged.

Before your spouse makes any claims for benefits, it may be useful for the two of you to talk with an advisor education in the area of Social Security Claiming to determine the most advantageous method of claiming benefits. A well prepared claim plan could net you thousands of additional dollars over yours and your spouse’s the lifetime.
