Learn the Secrets of Successful Retirees

September 19, 2016

Do worries about retirement keep you up at night? You’re not alone. According to an exclusive study, about half of the retirees surveyed who are living comfortably admit still losing sleep over financial concerns.

In order to help Americans get the most out of their retirement, we conducted a survey of 510 retirees and semi-retirees to learn how they prepared for their golden years. After we analyzed the data, we got some of the top social influencers in personal finance and wealth to comment on the findings, which include:

  • 36% of successful retirees never calculated how much they would need for retirement! Only 17% first made this calculation in their 20s or 30s; 24% waited until their 50s or 60s.

  • Half of successful retirees saved for retirement during their 20s and/or 30s. 58% continued to save for retirement in their 60s.

  • Though stocks were named the highest performing asset class by 54% of successful retirees, nearly 1 in 4 cited unwise stock investments as their biggest financial regret.

These findings, and many more, were published recently, in an eBook written by Emily Guy Birken, author of The Five Years Before You Retire. Our hope is that the collective wisdom of these comfortably retired and semi-retired men and women -- together with insights from top social influencers -- will help Americans prepare for their own successful retirement.
