When you apply for credit a "hard inquiry" is made by a lender which will knock points off your score. These may stay on your credit report for as long as two years and can impact your credit for as long as one year after they are made. Making an occasional application for credit won't make much of a difference to your credit score, however several applications over a short period of time will have a negative impact on your score.
