How far behind do you have to be before foreclosure starts?

Hi Sara, it depends on what state you live in. Typically, if you are at least 3 months behind in payments, the foreclosure process can start with the lender. Once they actually file the foreclosure, then it truly does depend on the state you live in how long it would take for you to have to leave the property. For instance, here in Washington State, it typically takes 120 days from start to finish after the foreclosure has been filed. However, it always behooves someone to communicate with the lender early so they can ultimately come up with a resolution.
