How do I go about removing an item from my credit report?

I accepted an offer to settle a debt from NCB Management and paid the requested amount. They indicated this would keep the item from appearing on my credit history but it is showing up and affecting my credit score quite a lot. I'm considering using a service like National Debt Relief, would that get the item off my credit history?
