To find out if you have a 401(k) already, check with your current or previous employers. In the past, you would have had to opt in to start your 401(k), today you will have to opt out if you do not want to participate. If you have access to a 401(k), it is a great way to save for retirement with pre-tax dollars. If your employer offers any kind of matching, think of it as free money and do your very best to contribute enough to get the full employer match.
As for IRAs, you would have had to open one on your own initiative, so it is unlikely that you have one. You would also receive statements either by paper or electronically for an IRA.
Regardless of whether you have either, you can always open a new one and start planning for your future.
