How can I find out how much is in my IRS account due to over payment of taxes?

A few years ago I had a small tax bill, around $85 and when I sent the payment the IRS sent me a letter saying that they had used funds from overpayment of taxes. How do I find out how much I might have in this account and how can I get it?

You can request a copy of your account transcripts directly online at www.irs.gov or go to an Enrolled Agent or CPA and they can do it for you (and quicker). The transcripts will tell you everything and if you want more than one year, you can do that too.

You can go to www.irs.gov and get a transcript of each of the tax years. You will have to set up an account, which does take a few minutes and expect a variety of questions and information that you will need in order to accomplish it. All in all, it is not that hard and you will be able to see everything the IRS has on a year by year basis. They do not combine years, so you have to do each one separately.
