Mortgage Daily magazine has analyzed data gathered from banks, non-banks, and credit unions who lent money for housing purchases in 2015. The results show that even though the fourth quarter of 2015 was relatively weak, it was stronger than the same period from 2014. In fact, the number of mortgages granted was almost a third more with a total of $375 billion dollars’ worth of loans being made. This was down from the $435 billion in mortgages granted in the third quarter of 2015. The top lenders as far as amount of money lent were, in descending order: Wells Fargo, Chase, Quicken Loans, US Bank, and Bank of America.
As far as originations go, 2015 in total saw an estimated $1.683 trillion dollars in mortgages created across all lenders, up from the $1.290 trillion from 2014. Out of those loans, almost half (43 percent) came from banks. This was down from 2014, which saw 47 percent of banks originate all mortgages. Non-bank mortgages increased, taking 48 percent of the market (up from 44 percent in 2014). Credit unions took the remaining 9 percent, the same amount of the market they held in 2014.
The top 2015 lenders in terms of both dollar amount and originators, in descending order, were: Wells Fargo, Chase, Quicken, US Bank, and Bank of America.
Finally, when ranked by their mortgage servicing portfolios, Wells Fargo and Chase continued to hold the top two spots with portfolios worth $1,645 billion and $910 billion respectively. Bank of America, Nationstar Mortgage, LLC, and US Bank rounded out the top five.
