Transgender Individuals Who Have Made Millions

Wealthiest Transgenders
February 12, 2016

Transgender individuals have become more prominent in both the news and entertainment fields lately. From the Amazon dramedy series, Transparent, and Chelsea Manning of WikiLeaks fame to the very public transition of Bruce Jenner into Caitlyn, there is a greater awareness of transgender individuals and their challenges.

Progress has not been limited to awareness. There are a few transgender individuals that have achieved great financial success, breaking the hundred-million-dollar mark in net worth — and in one case, the billion-dollar mark. Four transgender individuals are far ahead of the others on the wealth list.

Jennifer Pritzker – The former Army Lieutenant Colonel is the only known transgender billionaire as of this writing, with a net worth of $1.75 billion — good for #389 on the Forbes list of the richest people in America. The Pritzker family wealth comes from the industrial conglomerate Marmon Holdings, now controlled by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway group.

Martine Rothblatt – Rothblatt has had several impressive careers along the way. She was a lawyer in the telecommunications industry, a founder of Sirius Satellite Radio (now Sirius XM), and started the biotech firm United Therapeutics. Rothblatt is also a published author. Her current net worth is estimated at $390 million.

Lana and Lilly Wachowski – These sisters are multi-talented artists with screenwriter, film director, and producer among their many credits. They are best known as the co-creators of the Matrix series of films. They also have writing and directing credits on Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas, and Jupiter Ascending, among other ventures. Their net worth is estimated at $125 million each for a combined total of $250 million.

Caitlyn Jenner – The newest entry into the transgender list, Jenner came out with a splash in a televised interview and a now-famous Vanity Fair cover. Caitlyn's net worth is estimated at $100 million but is almost certain to skyrocket given her reality TV show, I Am Cait and other enterprises. There have been reports of a contract up to $75 million to continue her TV show with the E! network.

The transgendered people on the second wealth tier have net worth values between $1 million and $5 million. They include:

Laura Jane Grace – The lead singer of Against Me! is reportedly worth $5 million.

Conchita Wurst – Arguably the most striking in appearance with her long flowing hair and eyelashes alongside a dark, neatly trimmed beard, the pop star/drag queen has a net worth of nearly $3 million.

Laverne Cox – The Orange Is The New Black actress is worth approximately $2 million, and is the first publicly transgender individual to receive a primetime Emmy nomination.

Carmen Carrera – Carrera's acting, modeling, and burlesque show performances have earned her $2 million to date.

Amanda Lepore – The model/artist/singer is one of the most notable transgender public figures and is worth around $1.7 million.

It’s entirely possible that other transgender individuals exist in the gap between the $5 million and $100 million criteria, but are either not comfortable coming out publicly as transgender or not willing to disclose their wealth. Some sources discussing wealthy transgender people include Renée Richards, the ophthalmologist and professional tennis player who underwent sex change surgery in 1975 and won access to play in women's professional tournaments. Her net worth is not clear, although it stands to reason that she might qualify for this list.

Expect the list to grow in the next few years for several reasons. More individuals are likely to come out as transgender given increased societal acceptance, and logically, there will be more transgender millionaires as a result.

Good for them, I guess? They probably shouldn't be lumped into one group though just because they're transgender. Being transgender and the amount of money they have have nothing to do with each other.

I admire the people for being themselves in a very public way. I'm sure it wasn't an easy road.

Interesting. I never heard of a couple of these people.

I love Laverne Cox in OITNB. I'm glad to see she has become so successful and wish her continued success.

I feel some on this list made it this far because of talent. Their transition was not a factor. I think how they carry themselves makes a difference

Why does it really matter what their life style is in relation to their wealth? Not sure what they have to do with each other.

It surprises me that Katelyn Jenner wasn't at the top. Mostly because of ignorance I guess. She's the only famous transgender that I know of.

I could care less about someone sexual identity, Each person should be true to themselves. I just feel sorry for the people who can't afford to have the surgeries required.

it is sad that there has to be an awareness made about people being who they feel they are, or want to be. This all should not be a taboo, or a shocking thing. I am glad for those who have found a way to promote individuality, maybe it will help others see that they are not different.

Lavern & Caitlyn didn't really surprise me, especially since they're in the media a lot, however there's quite a few of these that I have never heard of. I think it' great though that they have been able to be successful.
